Vendrogno is situated to the right of the River Pioverna, which
flows down to form the promontory of Bellano on Lake Como.
A single jug and a column dedicated to Livia and "L.Tullius Secundus"
show the area was inhabited in Roman times. There used to be watchtowers in
Mornico and Inesio (the tower in Inesio still exists although transformed)
used during the wars between Milan and Venice in the 15th century as part
of Milan's defences against its rival.
Between the 18th century and the Second World War it was a well-known health
resort, mentioned in Baedecker and was at its richest, with an income deriving
from cattle and tourism.
The "fractions" of the village (Sanico, Mornico, Noceno, Inesio
and Comasira) are dotted up the flanks of Mount Muggio, which gives its name
to the area : Muggiasca.
The surroundings are breathtaking: fields of wild narcissus and wild orchids,
chestnut woods, pastures with rustic cow sheds (Camaggiore, Tedoldo, Lornico,
Chiaro), gorges down whose crooked bottlenecks streams cascade, the "Tomb
of Taino" - a natural giants' cauldron. And of course the amazing views
over Lake Como into Switzerland and Lake Lugano.
